Top 5 Things to do in the Summer

wigwam resortWith daytime temperatures over 100 degrees for most of the summer, we’re all looking for fun places to cool off! I’ve been living in the Valley of the Sun for almost 25 years and everyone I know is always looking for something cool to do in the summer! Here are a few of my favorites:

Local Resorts
Most 4 and 5-star luxury resorts offer their best deals during the summer months, because they cannot fill all the rooms since Valley tourism is always down June-August. The fantastic deals are a great way for locals to enjoy a fun and affordable staycation at an otherwise pricey resort. The Wigwam (pictured) in Litchfield Park is popular with families and those looking for a quiet spa weekend. The Wigwam has summer activities for the enter family every weekend.

Waterparks
The Valley is home to several awesome waterparks; Hurricane Harbor in North Phoenix, Sun Splash in Mesa and Big Surf in Tempe. Waterparks are one of the best ways to enjoy a hot summer day while still being outside in the fresh air.

OdySea Aquarium
The OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale is a massive 200,000 square foot facility which puts it at the largest aquarium in the Southwest. A visit to the aquarium is the perfect way to escape the heat for a few hours. While you’re there, don’t miss out on the enclosed escalator fish tank, the restroom shark fish tank which ranks amongst “the best bathrooms in the US”, and the Living Sea Carousel, a rotating exhibit which takes you past 4 exhibits including a massive shark and sea lion tank.

Museums
Summer is the perfect time to check out the Valley’s diverse museum scene. A few of my favorite’s include the Musical Instrument Museum, The Phoenix Art Museum and The Science Center. Spending a few hours strolling in an air conditioned museum is the perfect opportunity to escape the heat while enjoying a fun and educational activity. Be sure to check out the summer concert series at the Musical Instrument Museum.

Ice Skating
When you really want to cool off, head on over to one of the Valley’s ice skating rinks where the inside temperature is always a cool 55 degrees! AZ Ice in Peoria offers public skating times, lessons and camps.

Upscale Dining and Retail Coming to Peoria

Have you heard about the new 83 Marketplace being built in Peoria? The new 9-acre site is being developed by MDC Land Development, on the Southeast corner of 83rd Avenue & Happy Valley Road in North Peoria. 83 Marketplace will be approximately 50,000 square feet of high-end retail and restaurant space and is set to open Spring 2019. This new project is great news for the growing and vibrant Peoria community. 83 Marketplace will bring new jobs, economic growth and tax producing revenue to the community.

Several exciting new restaurants are already set to open at 83 Marketplace:

Deem Proper – A locally owned and operated contemporary kitchen and bar that will feature globally inspired menu options and local craft beer.

S & V Urban Italian – Traditional Italian fare with a modern twist, and wood fire brick oven pizza.

AVENIDA Modern Mexican – A modern twist on traditional Mexican, this restaurant will feature made-from-scratch dishes and hand-crafted margaritas and cocktails.

Bagels on Fire – Started in Toronto Canada, Bagels on Fire features bagels made the old-fashioned way, boiled in honey water and baked in a fire brick oven.

Residents are excited for new growth and business coming to the community. We can’t wait to hear what other fantastic new restaurants and retail shops are going to open! You can learn more about how this exciting new project is developing by visiting.

83 MARKETPLACE, 83rd Avenue & Happy Valley Road

If you drive out to North Peoria, specifically the intersection of 83rd Ave and Happy Valley Road, you won’t find much—for now. But for all of you living or considering a home out in Peoria or the northwest valley, I was so excited to hear about the transformation that’s happening on that corner of land! Construction is already underway on 83 Marketplace, a retail plaza with a promising new lineup of restaurants.

Here’s the scoop on the newest culinary concepts announced in the space. Deem Proper will offer globally-inspired fare in contemporary, yet comfortable digs. Their beer and wine menu invites patrons to try locally crafted Arizona favorites, plus cocktails that rotate seasonally.

S & V Urban Italian is also joining 83 Marketplace and already operates a location in Scottsdale, where exceptional Italian with a modern twist is their pride and joy. They’ll be serving up wood-fired pizzas and signature fresh fruit martinis in a laid-back atmosphere.

A new concept in upscale, upbeat Mexican food is AVENIDA Modern Mexican. The restaurant will tap into top local businesses for ingredients, and offer fresh and eclectic takes on Mexican favorites: handmade tortillas, seafood, hand-crafted margaritas and tequilas among them.

Our neighbors up north are gracing us with Bagels on Fire, a Toronto-based bagel company with a fiery old-fashioned technique. They boil their fresh bagels in honey water, then fire them in a brick oven (and yep, you can watch!).

The 83 Marketplace tenants are the efforts of the developer (MDC Land Development) and the community to bring upscale dining options to the area. For area residents and visitors, the plaza will offer plenty of open space for indoor and outdoor dining and shopping. This exciting project isn’t the only one in the works, either; just across the street, the Trailhead project is underway with a Safeway and more community amenities.

It’s a hot time to be in the surrounding neighborhoods as projects like these develop making this a desirable community to live in – thousands of new homes are expected to be built in this area in the next few years!
