5 tips for maximizing the coziness of a new home

When purchasing a home, whether it’s brand new or not, most people want to do whatever is in their power to make their living space familiar and comfortable. When the weather is less than ideal, a comfortable home with useful amenities becomes a sanctuary. The same goes true after coming home from a long day (or a long week) of work.

There are numerous ways to make your home cozier. Below, The Fay Group goes over a few tips to boost your home’s coziness.

1.) Add Some Life to Your Living Space

Plants are a great way to make any space come to life. You can pick up some inexpensive low-maintenance plants at your local nursery, or even places like Home Depot. If you live a busy, on-the-go lifestyle, succulents are a great choice since you won’t have to water them as much as other plants and they will still thrive. You will end up developing a personal relationship with your plants as they depend on you for care.

Some places to incorporate plants into your space include:

  • Mantle
  • Kitchen counter
  • Bathroom sink
  • Entry area
  • Landing area on stairs

2.) Making an Entrance

Creating a welcoming and inviting home starts when you or a visitor walks up to your front door. A nice wreath and/or personalized welcome mat will let you and your visitors know that they are entering a friendly and comfortable space. And if you have room…a chair, bench, or small seating area is a fantastic way to increase coziness at your front door!

You can also add some new lighting, art, or some sort of outdoor decoration piece that will enhance your home’s entrance as well. Check out Improve Your Home’s Entrance for tips and more ideas!

3.) Invest in Comfortable Furniture

Instead of focusing on design when it comes to furniture, it might be a better idea to focus on comfort. Try out a bunch of options and select the furniture that makes you feel most at home. You can also opt for an unexpected color when it comes to couches and chairs, just make sure that whatever you choose goes with the motif of the room and your home overall.

Think about what makes you comfy…is it a reclining chair? L-shaped couch? Footrest? And don’t forget to have enough furniture to comfortably seat the people living in your home with room for guests!

4.) Enhance Your Lighting

One way to set a little ambiance is by finding the right lighting. If you plan on having guests, for instance, you’ll want to give your house plenty of light that highlights your home’s interior features. If you’re not planning on having groups of people over, you may want to go with dim lighting that will help create a comfy atmosphere.

There are so many different types of light to choose from including:

  • LED
  • Ecosmart
  • Fluorescent
  • Halogen

It’s important to choose the actual bulbs and fixture carefully!

Tip: large pendants and chandeliers create a sense of the overall vibe while table and floor lamps create pockets of coziness!

5.) Rugs and Mirrors

Choosing interesting rugs and mirrors to accentuate your home decor will most certainly add to your home’s vibe. Hanging a cool-looking mirror in any room gives it more personality, opening up your space and adding dimension. Another idea is to invest in a nice rug- with so many patterns and textures to choose from, something as simple as adding a rug could change the whole atmosphere.

When hanging a mirror, make sure to not hang across from any clutter, instead hang somewhere where the reflection is something that you like to look at!

Tip: rectangular/square mirrors are seen as proper and rigid while round mirrors are looked at as more welcoming and inviting!

There are so many things you can do with your home to make it cozy and welcoming for yourself and anyone who visits. The sky’s the limit!
