What to Know Before Hiring a Cross-Country Moving Company
Moving across the country is already a huge transition—but hiring the wrong moving company can turn it into an absolute nightmare. I’ve seen it happen more than once, and trust me, I wouldn’t wish that kind of stress on anyone. If you’re planning a big move, here’s what you need to know to protect yourself, your belongings, and your peace of mind.
Why You Should Never Hire a Moving Broker
Let me start with one of the biggest red flags I’ve come across: moving brokers. I know, they often promise competitive pricing and make it sound like they’re streamlining the process—but what they’re really doing is outsourcing your move to third-party companies you’ve never even heard of.
One of my clients recently learned this the hard way. After submitting photos and videos of his belongings to the broker, he was given a “firm” quote and signed the paperwork. Sounds easy, right? Until two days before the move, when a representative from the moving company (not the broker!) showed up and said, “This quote is off—it’s going to be $10,000 more.”
Yes, you read that right. Ten. Thousand. Dollars. More.
My client was already days from needing to vacate his home. Panic set in. We fought back, called the Better Business Bureau, and I was even ready to get the local news involved. In the end, we canceled the move, found a different company, and begged for a one-week extension from the buyers of his home. It was stressful, unnecessary, and completely avoidable.
Stories That Still Haunt Me
Sadly, this wasn’t a one-time thing. I’ve had other clients go through similar (or worse) situations:
- One client’s moving company held their belongings hostage, demanding another $10,000 upon delivery.
- Another client? The moving truck disappeared somewhere between Arizona and New Hampshire—never to be found again. Imagine starting over with absolutely nothing because your movers vanished with all your stuff.
It sounds like something out of a bad movie, but this still happens today.
So What Should You Do?
If you’re planning a cross-country move, here’s my best advice:
1. Avoid Brokers
They don’t own trucks or employ movers—they’re just middlemen. You won’t know who’s actually handling your move until it’s too late.
2. Hire a Reputable Moving Company
Look for national companies with strong reputations, verified reviews, and a physical presence in your area. Have them come to your home for an in-person estimate.
3. Get a Binding Estimate
Make sure you get a written, binding estimate after a walk-through. No guessing based on photos or videos. This locks in your pricing and protects you from those last-minute surprises.
4. Ask the Tough Questions
Find out if they subcontract. Ask about insurance coverage. What happens if items are lost or damaged? Can they provide references from past clients?
5. Prepare for Peace of Mind
A cross-country move is already overwhelming—your moving company should give you confidence, not anxiety.
If you’re moving out of Arizona (or into it!), spend the extra time—and yes, a little extra money—on a company that does things the right way. Protect your belongings, your sanity, and your budget.
